A woman in her 30s is fighting for her life after suffering a severe neck injury in what police describe as an “unprovoked attack” in Birmingham city centre. Officers from West Midlands Police were called to Smallbrook Queensway shortly before 9pm on Friday following reports of a stabbing. Emergency services attended the scene and the woman was taken to hospital, where she remains in a critical but stable condition.
Police confirmed that a man in his 20s was arrested close to the scene shortly after the incident. He remains in custody for questioning. Investigators believe the attack was unprovoked and are working to determine the motive.
Detective Inspector James Nix said: “We believe this was an unprovoked attack and are working to understand why it happened. We will have officers in the area today to continue our investigation and provide reassurance to the community. We are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.”
Appeal for Witnesses and Community Reassurance
West Midlands Police said officers remain at the scene to conduct inquiries and gather evidence, including CCTV footage and witness statements. The force urged anyone who saw the incident or has information to come forward by calling 101 and quoting log 5503 of 7 November.
Residents and local businesses in the area have been reassured that a visible police presence will continue over the weekend as investigations progress.
Rise in Knife Crime in Birmingham
The attack comes amid growing concern over knife-related incidents in Birmingham and across the West Midlands. According to official figures released earlier this year, the region has recorded one of the highest rates of knife crime in England and Wales. Police have been increasing patrols in hotspot areas and running community awareness campaigns aimed at reducing street violence.
Authorities are urging members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour as they continue efforts to make the city centre safer.
