All Lush UK stores closed today, September 3, 2025, along with its online platforms and factories, in a powerful statement of solidarity with Gaza. The cosmetics retailer, known for its ethical values and activism, said the move was intended to highlight the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
The company explained in a statement that millions worldwide are anguished by images of starving civilians in Gaza. Lush said: “One thing we can send into Gaza is our love and a strong message that we stand in solidarity. This will take the form of halting business-as-usual by shutting our UK shops, website, and factories for one day, with our shop windows displaying the message STOP STARVING GAZA – WE ARE CLOSED IN SOLIDARITY.”
Fundraising Soap Relaunched for Gaza Aid
Lush confirmed it will relaunch its most successful fundraising product, the Watermelon Slice soap, with proceeds directed towards medical services in Palestine. These funds will include support for child mental health programs and charities preparing prosthetic limb services for adults and children injured in Gaza.
A Call for UK Government Action
The statement also stressed that by closing for a day, not only does Lush lose business, but the UK Government also loses tax revenue. The company urged the government to take stronger action, including halting arms sales to Israel and pushing for an immediate ceasefire.
Global Solidarity Expected
Although Lush trades in over 50 countries, the company said it was important to raise its voice first in the UK, where it was founded. However, similar actions may follow globally as other branches seek to express solidarity with Gaza.
Lush’s Ethical Legacy
Founded in Poole, Dorset, in the 1990s, Lush pioneered the use of natural, sustainable, and cruelty-free beauty products. The brand has built its reputation on environmental, animal, and human rights campaigns, often using its business as a platform for activism.
This year marks the company’s 30th anniversary, and it continues to champion grassroots causes, LGBTQ+ rights, and social justice. Lush says its mission is to “leave the world lusher than we found it.”
Genocide Scholars Condemn Israel’s Actions
The closure comes as the International Association of Genocide Scholars declared Israel’s actions in Gaza amount to genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity under the UN convention. According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, over 63,500 people have been killed and more than 160,000 injured during the 22-month-long war.
The UN-backed food monitor IPC has confirmed famine is occurring in parts of Gaza, with Israel accused of blocking food and medical aid.
