Thousands of travellers are still facing major disruption following the closure of Birmingham Airport’s runway after a light aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing on Wednesday.
The private plane, operated by Woodgate Aviation and en route to Belfast International Airport, developed issues with its landing gear and was forced to return to Birmingham. Upon touching down, the main undercarriage collapsed, prompting the airport to suspend all flight operations for several hours.
Although the runway has since reopened and flights have resumed, passengers are continuing to experience significant delays and cancellations. Many are still stranded, either awaiting departure for their holidays or trying to return home.
Emergency services were deployed to the scene, and images shared on social media showed the light aircraft stationary on the runway, with a strong emergency response presence. Police confirmed that one individual suffered minor injuries as a result of the incident.
Birmingham Airport has urged all passengers to check the status of their flights with their airlines and to follow the latest guidance. Several flights scheduled for Thursday have either been cancelled or delayed due to the knock-on effects of the incident.
The incident highlights the impact a single emergency can have on a busy international airport and underscores the importance of checking live travel updates during the summer holiday season.
