Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne has been admitted to hospital after reportedly collapsing at his residence in Poole, Dorset.
According to The Sun, the 58-year-old ex-Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, and Rangers midfielder was discovered semi-conscious in his bedroom over the weekend.
He is now receiving care in an acute medical unit and is said to be in a stable condition. Medical staff anticipate he will remain in the hospital for several days while he undergoes further treatment.
Gascoigne was found by former Brighton & Hove Albion defender Steve Foster, who expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support: “Thank you to everyone who has reached out—he’s received so many messages from old friends who are wishing him well and hoping to see him back on form.”
The much-loved England international—who earned 57 caps for his country—has battled alcohol addiction and mental health issues for decades.
These struggles, which began during his illustrious playing career, intensified following his retirement from professional football in 2004.
In 2020, Gascoigne revealed that he had taken drastic steps to manage his addiction, including having anti-alcohol pellets implanted in his stomach to trigger sickness if he consumed alcohol.
In a candid interview on the High Performance podcast last March, Gascoigne described himself as a “sad drunk”, sharing that he was living in a spare room at the Dorset home of his agent, Katie Davies.
