A 71-year-old man has died following a serious hit-and-run crash on the M6 motorway in Cheshire, police have confirmed.
The incident occurred on 23 May at approximately 06:15 BST between junction 16 (Crewe) and junction 17 (Sandbach). The man, who was driving a Volkswagen Transporter van, sustained life-threatening injuries after a collision with an unknown vehicle.
He was rushed to hospital for treatment but has since died from his injuries, Cheshire Police said in a statement.
Unknown vehicle fled the scene
The other vehicle involved in the crash failed to stop and left the scene. Cheshire Police have launched an investigation and are actively working to identify the driver responsible.
Sgt Andrew Dennison of the Cheshire Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit urged anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the crash to come forward.
“This is a tragic incident, and we are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has relevant video footage to contact us as soon as possible,” Sgt Dennison said.
Police appeal for witnesses
The force is particularly interested in speaking to anyone who was driving on the M6 between junctions 16 and 17 during the early morning hours of 23 May. Witness accounts and any CCTV or dashcam recordings could help locate the unidentified vehicle and bring closure to the victim’s family.
