The England women’s coaching staff is set for a major boost as head coach Sarina Wiegman appoints Janneke Bijl and Arvid Smit as her new assistant coaches, the Football Association confirmed in a recent statement.
Both coaches will begin their roles following this summer’s UEFA Women’s EURO, succeeding outgoing assistant Arjan Veurink, who is set to take over as head coach of the Netherlands national team. Bijl, who has worked with the Dutch women’s team since 2023, and Smit, a long-time member of the Netherlands’ coaching setup since 2018, bring valuable international experience to the England women’s coaching staff.
Wiegman Highlights Experience and Trust in New Appointments
England manager Sarina Wiegman praised the incoming duo, noting their impact will be crucial as the Lionesses target qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. “The bar is being raised with every tournament,” Wiegman said. “We need the very best approach to keep challenging the world’s top teams.”
She added, “I know they are excited by the challenge ahead, and I trust their ability to contribute to our training sessions, match planning, and wider team environment.”
Further Changes Within FA Women’s Football Structure
In addition to the assistant coach appointments, several key interim roles were announced. Geraint Twose becomes England’s lead transition coach, Gavin Step has been named interim women’s technical director, and Emma Coates will take on interim leadership of the women’s development teams.
These changes come as England prepare for critical UEFA Women’s Nations League fixtures against Portugal and Spain as part of their final build-up to the EURO tournament.
