The Women’s World Cup is set for a major expansion to 48 teams, starting with the 2035 tournament, which is poised to be hosted by the UK, according to Sky News sources.
The decision was agreed upon during the FIFA Council’s virtual meeting earlier today. The tournament, which currently features 32 nations, will be enlarged to mirror the men’s World Cup format.
The expansion will officially come into effect from the 2031 edition, due to be staged in the United States.
UK Positioned as 2035 Host Amid Growing Women’s Football Momentum
While the hosts for both the 2031 and 2035 tournaments still require formal ratification, the UK remains the sole bidder for 2035.
The bid includes plans to stage matches across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, marking what could be the UK’s first time hosting a FIFA World Cup since England’s historic triumph in 1966.
Football Association CEO Mark Bullingham said in April: “Hosting England’s first FIFA World Cup since 1966, alongside our home nations partners, will be very special.”
Boost for Women’s Football Across the Home Nations
The announcement is expected to significantly boost the women’s game in the UK, building on recent successes, including England’s victory in UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 and their runner-up finish in the 2023 Women’s World Cup final against Spain.
The upcoming 2027 tournament in Brazil will still feature 32 teams, maintaining the current structure before the planned expansion takes effect.
Chloe Kelly: ‘A World Cup at Home Would Be Incredible’
England forward Chloe Kelly, who scored the winning goal in the Euro 2022 final, previously expressed her excitement about the prospect of a home World Cup: “The Euros here was amazing and a World Cup would be absolutely incredible. England fans love football, and we’re ready to get behind the team.”
The move is expected to increase global participation and visibility for women’s football, with the UK aiming to lead the way in growing the sport both on and off the pitch.
