Motherwell FC has confirmed the appointment of Michael Wimmer, formerly of Austria Vienna, as their new head coach.
The German tactician parted ways with the Generali Arena last year and has a rich background as an assistant at Stuttgart and Augsburg.
Wimmer, 44, steps into the role vacated by Stuart Kettlewell, who resigned from Fir Park due to personal attacks following a string of poor results.
Despite interest from Bristol City last December, the League One side faced challenges in obtaining a work permit for Wimmer.
As a player, he featured for teams such as Lohhof, Dingolfing, and Ismaning before transitioning to coaching with Nuremberg in 2010 and later moving to Augsburg in 2018.
Wimmer temporarily led Stuttgart in 2022, securing four victories from eight matches. During his tenure at Austria Vienna, he achieved 27 wins in 61 games before his dismissal after the team finished eighth in the Austrian Bundesliga.
Currently, Motherwell is positioned eighth in the Scottish Premiership after a 3-0 loss at home to Ross County last Saturday.
The team was fifth in the league under Kettlewell’s management. Assistant coach Stephen Frail had temporarily taken charge during recent home defeats to Celtic and County.
