Ex-footballer Joey Barton has appeared in Liverpool Crown Court over allegations that he sent offensive social media messages to pundit Lucy Ward and broadcaster Jeremy Vine. The 42-year-old, from Widnes, Cheshire, is accused of posting indecent or grossly offensive communications on the platform X (formerly Twitter) between January and March 2023, allegedly intending to cause distress or anxiety.
During the 20-minute hearing, Barton spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth. The session primarily focused on administrative matters, which cannot be reported before the trial.
Barton Denies Charges, Trial Date Set
The former Manchester City, Newcastle United, Burnley, and QPR midfielder has denied all charges and remains on unconditional bail. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for 14 March 2025.
While Barton is known for his controversial presence both on and off the pitch, these allegations could mark a serious legal battle for the former player-turned-coach.
As the case progresses, further details are expected to emerge regarding the nature of the alleged messages and their impact on the recipients.
