Burial costs in Shropshire are set to increase significantly in the next financial year, with fees rising by 47.5%.
Shropshire Council’s cabinet has approved the change, which will see burial charges rise from £1,836 to £2,709 for 2025-26.
The council’s bereavement services provider, Dignity, proposed the fee hike following a benchmarking process with neighbouring councils.
Despite the sharp increase, the council stated that burial fees in Shropshire have remained among the lowest in the UK for years and will still be £200 lower than some nearby authorities.
The decision comes as the local authority works to bridge a £23 million budget shortfall for the upcoming financial year.
The proposed rise was included in a fees and charges report discussed at a council meeting, outlining expected revenue and adjustments to service costs.
Dignity is currently making significant investments in Emstrey Crematorium, which serves Shropshire and the surrounding areas. Planned upgrades include a new waiting room, improved toilet facilities, and ongoing site maintenance.
The recommended fee increase will now go before the full council for final approval. If approved, families arranging burials in Shropshire will face considerably higher costs from 2025 onwards.
