Spanish police have detained three British nationals on the Costa del Sol accused of abducting a UK cryptocurrency broker and demanding a ransom of €30,000 for his release.
The 34-year-old victim, who speaks Hindi, managed to escape his captors by tricking them into believing he was calling a customer to obtain a crypto wallet code, when he was actually alerting a friend in London.
This friend promptly informed the victim’s mother, who then contacted the police, sparking an urgent response.
Authorities had already pinpointed the location of the Estepona apartment where the victim was confined when he made a daring escape by jumping from a 30-foot balcony, resulting in broken ankles.
Police apprehended the suspects as they tried to flee in an Audi, capturing over €10,000 in cash, two firearms, three knives, 25 grams of pink cocaine, and other valuables.
The arrested individuals, who have prior criminal records in the UK, were subsequently held in custody.
The investigation suggests that the kidnappers targeted the victim following a fortuitous meeting in Marbella, where they learned about his involvement in cryptocurrency.
