A 50-year-old man from Rugeley has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a woman at a home in Great Haywood, Staffordshire.
Police were called to a property on Devereux Gardens at 5:10 PM (GMT) on Wednesday after concerns were raised about the woman’s welfare.
Upon arrival, officers discovered her inside the home and rushed her to hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Staffordshire Police confirmed that the suspect has also been arrested on suspicion of controlling or coercive behaviour, suggesting potential links to domestic abuse.
Authorities have not yet released details about the victim’s identity or the cause of death, but forensic teams remain at the scene as part of an ongoing murder investigation.
The arrest comes amid growing concerns about domestic violence and coercive control across the UK.
Since the introduction of the Serious Crime Act 2015, coercive or controlling behaviour in intimate or family relationships has been recognised as a criminal offence, carrying a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
Statistics from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal that in 2023 alone, nearly 100 women in England and Wales were killed by a current or former partner, highlighting the urgent need for domestic abuse awareness and support services.
