Prince Harry’s security arrangements in the UK are under fresh review after the government reportedly ordered a new assessment of the risks he faces when visiting the country. The move follows renewed requests from the Duke of Sussex for clarity on the level of protection available to him and his family when travelling to Britain.
According to reports, the Home Office has instructed officials to conduct a formal threat assessment for Harry — the first such review in five years. The Sun reported that the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (Ravec), which oversees security for high-profile individuals, has directed its risk management board to reassess the prince’s case. A decision is expected next month.
A source close to the duke confirmed that Harry wrote to the new home secretary, Shabana Mahmood, shortly after her appointment, requesting a full reassessment through Ravec. His request marks the latest step in an extended dispute over the security changes imposed after he stepped back from royal duties.
Legal Battle Over Previous Protection Ruling
Harry lost a major legal challenge in May after the court of appeal upheld Ravec’s earlier decision that he should not receive the same level of taxpayer-funded protection as working members of the royal family. The ruling followed his departure from senior royal duties in 2020, when he and the Duchess of Sussex relocated first to Canada and later to California.
The duke has argued that reduced security makes it unsafe to bring Meghan, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet to the UK, describing the court’s decision as making visits “impossible” under current conditions.
Responding to reports of the review, a government spokesperson said the UK’s protective security system remained “rigorous and proportionate”. They reiterated the Home Office’s longstanding position not to disclose individual arrangements, warning that doing so could compromise operational integrity.
Concerns Raised After “Known Stalker” Incident
The review also comes after the Daily Telegraph revealed that a “known stalker” came within feet of Prince Harry twice during his visit to London in September. The incidents heightened concerns around the adequacy of his current protection.
The security dispute has been one of the defining legal battles between Prince Harry and the UK government since his departure from royal duties. His legal team maintains that his global profile and past security threats place him at a higher level of risk than most public figures, a position they argue has not been fully accounted for since his protection was downgraded. The case has attracted considerable public and political attention, with each development closely watched as Harry continues to balance private life abroad with his ongoing ties to the UK.
