Thousands Demand Toilet Access in UK Schools
Thousands of people across the UK are rallying behind a growing petition calling for a change in school rules that would ensure students have unrestricted access to toilets throughout the school day.
The petition, which is rapidly gaining support, urges the Government to make it mandatory for schools to allow students to go to the toilet at all times during school hours.
At the time of writing, it has gathered around 9,800 signatures and is close to the 10,000 mark required for an official Government response.
Petition creator Kerry Sutton wrote: “Make it mandatory for schools to allow students to go to the toilet at all times throughout the school day when they need to and do not lock toilets so that they aren’t accessible during certain times of the day.”
Sutton added: “We think children are being punished for using the toilet when they need to. We’re concerned that this can happen in the year 2025.”
Currently, there is no legislation preventing schools from locking toilets at specific times of the day, leaving many students unable to access facilities when needed.
If the petition reaches 100,000 signatures, it will be considered for debate in Parliament — potentially sparking a national discussion on student welfare, school policies, and children’s rights.
