The NHS has launched a new campaign in the East of England to reduce childhood asthma deaths, running from 8 to 12 September 2025. The initiative comes at a critical time when hospital admissions for asthma attacks among children traditionally rise after the summer holidays.
Sue Arrowsmith, head of the NHS Children and Young People’s Network in the region, highlighted the urgency of the effort: “One child dies every four weeks in England due to asthma, and many of these deaths are preventable. This campaign is about simple changes that can make a big difference to children’s lives.”
The campaign, the busiest asthma awareness drive ever recorded in the East of England, is designed to raise awareness, improve care, and provide practical support for families.
The NHS is promoting four essential care steps for asthma management in children:
• Having a personalised asthma action plan
• Using inhalers correctly
• Scheduling regular asthma reviews
• Monitoring air quality
The campaign also offers parents, carers, and communities across the East of England a range of resources, including films, blogs, podcasts, and presentations. Comprehensive information is available on the NHS website to support families in managing asthma effectively.
To further strengthen prevention, the NHS is encouraging parents and carers to take the free, 45-minute “Improving Asthma Care Together” online training. This course equips families with practical guidance on asthma control and managing emergency situations, with the ultimate aim of saving children’s lives.
