The United Kingdom Government has unveiled strict new rules on overseas recruitment, blocking foreign workers from filling more than 100 occupations in a bid to cut net migration.
The Home Office confirmed the move in a statement on X, stressing that the new policy is designed to create more opportunities for British workers while reshaping the country’s visa system.
“Cutting net migration means getting the fundamentals right. More than 100 occupations are no longer eligible for overseas recruitment – opening up more jobs for British workers. A fairer, skills-focused system is now taking shape,” the Home Office wrote.
This marks one of the most significant immigration policy shifts under Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who assumed office on July 5, 2024, following Labour’s landslide election victory that ended Rishi Sunak’s Conservative government.
Labour shortages warning
Critics have warned the new restrictions could deepen existing labour shortages, particularly in vital sectors such as health and social care, which have long relied on overseas workers to fill gaps.
The Home Office has not yet released the full list of restricted occupations, but initial reports indicate a broad impact across industries. Employers in multiple sectors are now bracing for challenges in workforce planning as the policy takes effect.
This policy forms part of Starmer’s broader strategy to address immigration concerns while promoting what officials describe as a “fairer, skills-driven” labour market for the UK
