Flash flood warning alerts have been issued across large parts of southern England as torrential downpours, hail, and thunderstorms are expected to cause travel chaos and property damage throughout Thursday.
The UK Met Office has placed a yellow thunderstorm warning in effect from 10am to 9pm, covering major cities and counties including London, Bristol, Oxford, Southampton, Kent, and Ipswich. Forecasters warn that as much as 60mm of rain could fall within just two hours, raising the risk of flash flooding, hailstorms, and lightning strikes.
Areas at Risk of Flash Flooding
The flash flood warning covers broad regions of the East of England, London and the South East, and South West England. Affected areas include Central Bedfordshire, Essex, Suffolk, Hertfordshire, Luton, and Thurrock, along with Greater London and surrounding counties such as Kent, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, and Surrey. Southwest areas like Bristol, Dorset, Somerset, and Gloucestershire are also on high alert.
Public Urged to Prepare Emergency Flood Kits
The Met Office has advised residents in flood-prone areas to prepare flood plans and emergency kits in anticipation of dangerous weather. Although the Environment Agency states that flooding is possible but not expected, there remains a real risk of surface water flooding, particularly in built-up areas.
“Properties may flood and there may be travel disruption,” the agency warned, adding that difficult driving conditions and possible road closures should be expected.
Storms Could Bring Sudden Damage
Thursday’s storms are expected to bring frequent lightning, hail, and winds strong enough to cause minor structural damage. The Met Office said there’s a small chance of building damage from floodwaters and storm debris.
“Thunderstorms and heavy showers are expected to develop during Thursday morning and through the afternoon,” it noted. Some areas could see 25-35mm of rain in just an hour, with localised flooding likely in the hardest-hit zones.
Calmer Weather Expected by the Weekend
Following the stormy weather, sunny conditions are forecast to return on Friday, with temperatures rising to 22°C. Warmer weather is expected to persist through the weekend, offering brief relief after weeks of unsettled conditions that have included heatwaves, wildfires, and earlier storm warnings.
