Seven Iranian nationals have appeared in a UK court following a violent altercation outside the Iranian Embassy in London, as political tensions surrounding Iran’s government spill over onto British streets.
The men, aged between 30 and 50, are accused of grievous bodily harm after allegedly attacking a pro-government individual during a protest last Friday. The confrontation unfolded near the embassy during a demonstration by Iranian royalist supporters, according to court testimony.
At Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday, prosecutors said the incident was sparked when a man knelt and kissed an Iranian flag laid on the ground before attempting to flee with it. Prosecutor Rachel Hughes told the court that the group then pursued and assaulted him for over six minutes.
The victim, identified as a pro-government demonstrator, sustained serious injuries, including broken ribs, a fractured ankle, and a suspected brain hemorrhage, and remains hospitalised. The Crown Prosecution Service said the level of violence warranted the charges of grievous bodily harm.
Defence lawyers argued that the accused are all critics of Iran’s regime, claiming they had previously received threats linked to their political activities. The court denied bail to all seven men. Their case has been transferred to Southwark Crown Court, with a hearing scheduled for 21 July.
The embassy brawl came just days after a volatile escalation in the Israel-Iran conflict, which saw missile exchanges and drone attacks across the region. The UK-based attack coincided with global scrutiny over Iran’s political future and its strained relations with Western powers.
