A group of Iranian nationals arrested across England at the weekend are suspected of plotting a terrorist attack targeting Israel’s embassy in London, according to multiple sources.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrests were part of a major counter-terrorism operation aimed at preventing a serious security threat.
Four men, aged between 29 and 46, remain in custody as police investigate the alleged attempt to attack a specific site. While authorities have not officially confirmed the target, several sources indicate the Israeli embassy in Kensington was the intended location.
The suspects were arrested in coordinated raids across Swindon, west London, Stockport, and Rochdale. The arrests were reportedly prompted by concerns that the plot was nearing execution. Armed officers and special forces were deployed to detain the suspects before any attack could be carried out.
Security officials believe the plan was advanced, though not yet imminent. Police are continuing to search properties linked to the suspects, with two sites still under investigation four days after the arrests.
Investigators are examining potential connections to Iranian state entities, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security. The extent of any foreign involvement remains a key line of enquiry.
Iran’s foreign ministry has strongly denied any role in the alleged plot, criticising the lack of formal diplomatic communication and suggesting the situation may involve third-party provocation.
Iranian officials have stated they are willing to assist with any credible investigation and called for due process for their citizens.
UK security minister Dan Jarvis confirmed that law enforcement agencies have been in contact with the embassy’s representatives to provide security advice and support. Authorities have yet to reveal the immigration status of the suspects or how they entered the UK.
The alleged terror plan comes amid rising concerns over Iranian-linked plots on British soil. In late 2023, MI5 reported a significant rise in Iran-related threats, uncovering multiple attempted attacks within the UK. Since January 2022, the Security Service has disrupted over 20 such plots.
This latest investigation is being coordinated with the Crown Prosecution Service, which is considering whether charges will be brought once the permitted detention period expires. Unless extended by a court, police must decide whether to charge or release the suspects by Saturday.
In a separate but related operation, three more Iranian nationals were arrested in London on espionage charges under the National Security Act 2023. That investigation remains ongoing.
The UK government and counter-terrorism authorities continue to monitor threats linked to foreign powers, particularly as geopolitical tensions increase. The alleged embassy plot has intensified focus on the security of diplomatic missions in the capital.
