Passengers using the Trent Valley line are being urged to plan their journeys in advance, as a key section of the railway between Rugby and Stafford has been closed for nine days to carry out essential improvement works. The closure, which began on Saturday, will continue until 1 June, with rail replacement buses and diversions in place throughout the period.
Network Rail has confirmed that no direct trains will operate between Rugby in Warwickshire and Stafford in Staffordshire during the closure. The extensive works are intended to enhance the reliability and long-term performance of one of the West Coast Main Line’s critical routes.
Track Renewals and Bridge Works Underway
The upgrade project includes the installation of new tracks near Atherstone and waterproofing works on a bridge that spans the River Anker near Tamworth. In addition, essential repairs are being made to the footbridge at Rugeley Trent Valley station to ensure safer and more efficient passenger access.
Gary Walsh, director at Network Rail, said the improvement programme will “help to deliver a smoother and more reliable railway for passengers and freight services alike.” He encouraged rail users to consult National Rail Enquiries or their train operators to plan alternative travel routes during the disruption.
Rail Replacement Services and Disruptions
Train services on the Trent Valley line have been significantly affected, with no Avanti West Coast or London Northwestern Railway trains operating between Rugby and Stafford for the duration of the works. Passengers are advised to use rail replacement buses and consider rerouted train options for onward travel.
Network Rail thanked travellers for their patience and cooperation during the upgrades, which are part of a broader commitment to improving Britain’s rail infrastructure.
