The Kremlin has dismissed as “absurd” UK allegations suggesting Russian involvement in a recent arson attack on the home of Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The claims, which surfaced in a Financial Times report citing unnamed British officials, are being investigated by UK authorities following a series of fire incidents targeting Starmer’s properties.
Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov strongly denied the accusations, stating: “London is prone to suspect Russia of all the bad things happening in the UK. These suspicions are groundless, unsubstantiated, and often ridiculous.”
Arson Investigation Targets Ukrainian Suspects
UK police have arrested three Ukrainian nationals in connection with the incidents. The attacks, which occurred between May 8 and 12, included the arson of the door of Starmer’s home in Kentish Town, north London, as well as damage to his former flat in Islington and an old car he previously owned.
Roman Lavrynovych, 21, was the first to be arrested and charged with three counts of arson with intent to endanger life. Two other suspects—Stanislav Karpyuk, 26, and Pyotr Pochink, 34—were also arrested and appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on charges including conspiracy to damage property and intent to endanger life.
Political Tensions Escalate Amid Ongoing UK-Russia Strains
The UK government’s inquiry into potential Russian state involvement has sparked renewed diplomatic tensions. While no direct evidence has been publicly disclosed linking the Kremlin to the attacks, the investigation remains open and has drawn considerable media attention.
The incidents occurred just months after Keir Starmer moved with his family to Downing Street, following Labour’s electoral victory in July 2024.
