A man has been charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of a customer inside a Lloyds Bank branch in Derby.
Police were called to the scene on St Peter’s Street at around 2:35pm on Tuesday, 6 May, after reports of a stabbing inside the city centre bank.
Emergency services attended, but the victim, 37-year-old Gurvinder Johal, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Haybe Nur Cabdiraxmaan, aged 47 and from Mickleover in Derby, was arrested shortly after the incident. He has since been charged with the murder of Mr Johal and is due to appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 8 May.
The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed that charges had been authorised following a detailed review of the evidence submitted by Derbyshire Constabulary.
The prosecution stressed the importance of ensuring a fair trial, urging the public to avoid sharing information or making comments online that could interfere with the ongoing legal proceedings.
A second man, also in his 30s, was initially arrested in connection with the case but has since been released without charge.
Mr Johal has been remembered by members of the community as a respected and generous local businessman.
Councillor Ajit Atwal, leader of the Liberal Democrat group on Derby City Council and a friend of Mr Johal, said the news had left his family devastated and described him as kind-hearted and always willing to help others.
