Chris Brown, the American rapper and former partner of singer Rihanna, has been arrested in Salford over an alleged bottle attack at a London nightclub in 2023.
The 36-year-old was detained by Metropolitan Police detectives in the early hours of Thursday morning (15 May) at the luxury Lowry Hotel in Greater Manchester, shortly after arriving in the UK ahead of his scheduled Breezy Bowl XX tour.
He is currently being held in custody on suspicion of grievous bodily harm (GBH) following an investigation into an incident that took place at Tape nightclub in Mayfair on 19 February 2023.
Brown is accused of launching an unprovoked attack on music producer Abe Diaw, allegedly striking him with a bottle two or three times before punching and kicking him while he was on the ground.
Diaw has since claimed he required crutches to walk after the incident and is reportedly pursuing a $16 million civil lawsuit against the singer.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police confirmed: “A 36-year-old man was arrested at a hotel in Manchester shortly after 0200hrs on Thursday, 15 May, on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.”
“He has been taken into custody where he remains. The arrest relates to an incident at a venue in Hanover Square on 19 February 2023.”
Brown’s UK tour is due to begin on 15 June at Manchester’s Co-op Live arena, with 10 performances scheduled across the country. It is not yet clear whether the arrest will impact the tour dates.
The incident adds to a long list of controversies surrounding the Go Crazy hitmaker, whose past legal troubles have included a 2009 conviction for assaulting Rihanna.
