A man in his 30s was fatally stabbed near Brixton Underground station in the early hours of Thursday morning, prompting a murder investigation by the Metropolitan Police.
Officers were called to Brixton Road at approximately 5:10 AM on March 20, following reports of a man suffering a stab wound. Paramedics and emergency services attended the scene, but despite their efforts, the victim was pronounced dead on-site.
A man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder, and police have cordoned off multiple areas as investigations continue.
Crime Scene and Business Disruptions
A forensics tent has been set up outside a coffee shop on Coldharbour Lane, while police have sealed off an area stretching from Brixton Library and The Ritzy Cinema to Windrush Square.
Local businesses are already feeling the impact of the police cordon. A café worker at Brixton Community Market expressed frustration over the disruption:
“No one is passing through the market. They are saying it is going to be like this all day.”
Staff at the Premier Inn Hotel near the scene have also been affected. A hotel employee noted:
“We have to use the back doors. Police are coming inside and checking.”
Safety Concerns Raised by Locals
The fatal stabbing has reignited safety concerns among Brixton residents. According to a worker at Brixton Community Market, locals recently raised security fears in a meeting with police.
“We had a meeting with the police a few weeks ago, and they asked who felt unsafe in Brixton. Almost everyone raised their hands. The cleaners were told to close the entrance to the market on Coldharbour Lane.”
