On Saturday evening, two motorways were closed for several hours following the discovery of human remains on the roadway.
The incident, reported by several motorists from 6.40 pm, occurred between junctions 20 and 21 of the M4, spanning Almondsbury to Awkley.
Authorities believe the remains belong to a man in his forties, and his family has been informed.
The extensive police investigation aims to determine the circumstances that led to the man’s presence on the motorway.
The M4 was temporarily closed in both directions between junctions 20 and 22, just north of Bristol, but has since been reopened.
The eastbound lanes of the M4 were accessible by approximately 1:30 am on Sunday, and the westbound lanes followed, reopening around 3:00 am.
Avon and Somerset Police have issued a call for witnesses, urging anyone who travelled along that section of the M4 during the incident and possesses any pertinent information or dashcam footage to come forward.
Additionally, the M48 was closed in both directions between the M4 and junction 1 near the Severn Bridge, though it too has been reopened, according to National Highways.
