A British journalist has gone missing in Brazil, prompting concerns from the foreign press community and calls for authorities to intensify search efforts.
Charlotte Alice Peet, 32, was last known to be in São Paulo on 8 February before planning to travel to Rio de Janeiro.
She informed a friend of her whereabouts but has not been heard from since. Days later, her family reached out to the same friend after losing contact with her, raising the alarm over her disappearance.
Peet has worked as a foreign correspondent in Brazil for major news organisations, including Al Jazeera and The Times, according to her LinkedIn profile.
She had previously lived in Rio de Janeiro over two years ago before returning to London. In November 2024, she moved back to Brazil.
The Association of Foreign Correspondents in Brazil (ACIE) has issued a statement expressing deep concern and urging authorities to step up the search efforts.
The case was initially reported to police in Rio but was later transferred to São Paulo, where she was last known to be.
The São Paulo Public Security Secretariat has confirmed that the state’s homicide and missing persons unit is now involved in the investigation.
According to reports, Peet contacted a friend in Rio via WhatsApp, stating she needed a place to stay, but the friend was unable to accommodate her.
Her family has since provided details of her flight to Brazil and a copy of her passport to aid the search.
The ACIE has called on authorities to intensify efforts to locate her, stressing the urgency of the situation. The organisation, alongside its president Edmar Figueiredo and its board of directors, has extended its support to Peet’s family and friends during this distressing time.
Authorities in both São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro continue to investigate, with growing concern over her sudden disappearance.
