Two men have been arrested in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, as part of an ongoing investigation into a brutal assault in Lifford, County Donegal, that left a man in his 20s with serious injuries.
The incident occurred on Monday morning at approximately 10:00 local time on Coneyburrow Road in Lifford, a town situated near the border with Northern Ireland.
The attack targeted a father and son at a private residence, leaving both victims requiring medical attention.
The younger victim, in his 20s, sustained severe injuries and was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, where he is currently receiving treatment.
His father, in his 60s, suffered less serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to Letterkenny University Hospital.
The arrests were made by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), who are collaborating closely with An Garda Síochána (the Irish police) to assist in the cross-border investigation. The two suspects remain in police custody as inquiries continue.
Lifford, the administrative capital of County Donegal, is located on the River Foyle, directly across from Strabane in Northern Ireland.
Its proximity to the border often necessitates close cooperation between Irish and Northern Irish authorities, particularly in criminal investigations involving cross-border elements.
Monday’s assault underscores the continued need for robust cross-border policing arrangements, which have been a cornerstone of the Good Friday Agreement and subsequent security protocols.
The PSNI and Gardaí frequently collaborate on cases of serious crime, utilising shared intelligence and resources to maintain safety on both sides of the border.
