A murder investigation has been launched following the discovery of a body believed to be that of a missing Hungarian woman, Mariann, in Greater Manchester. A 61-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in custody as detectives continue their inquiries.
Mariann Reported Missing After Last Being Seen in Bolton
Mariann, aged about 55, was last seen in Bolton on December 14. Her disappearance prompted an extensive nine-day search by Greater Manchester Police (GMP), including public appeals in both English and Hungarian. Police categorized Mariann as “high-risk” due to her circumstances, including her limited English proficiency.
Specialist units were deployed during the search, and members of the local community assisted by sharing information and appeals.
Body Found, Family Informed
Though the body found has not been formally identified, police believe it is Mariann. Her family has been informed and is being supported by family liaison officers during this distressing time.
Ch Supt Helen Critchley, of GMP’s Bolton district, expressed condolences to Mariann’s family and the local community:
“This is a tragic development to our extensive search for Mariann, which we desperately hoped would not be the case so close to Christmas. Our thoughts are with her family at this distressing time.
“We are continuing to work hard to establish the full circumstances in order to bring answers and seek justice for this woman. We would like to thank members of the Bolton community who have spoken to our officers and shared our appeals during the search.”
Ongoing Investigation
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to uncover the circumstances surrounding Mariann’s death. Police have urged anyone with information to come forward and assist in their inquiries.
